Applied Project Management: one project from start to finish, in PMWaves

Most project management seminars explain the techniques. In the new format of the Applied Project Management seminar you apply them. Over four online sessions of 4 teaching hours, each participant builds a complete project in PMWaves, the online project management software of Critical Path.

One scenario for everyone

The project is a 250-person conference, organised in 4 months on a budget of €45,000, with an internal team and external suppliers. Everyone works on the same project. Every exercise is discussed on common ground, and the choices of one participant become a lesson for all.

The scenario data is handed out in Excel and pasted straight into the PMWaves Gantt. The time goes into managing the project, not into typing.

What you do in each session

  1. Start and scope. Project definition, objectives and boundaries, stakeholders, and a WBS with work packages and deliverables.
  2. Scheduling. Activities in the Gantt, durations, dependencies and milestones. You see the critical path and what a delay means for the end date.
  3. Resources, cost and risks. Resource assignments and workload, cost from the resource rates compared with the budget. SWOT analysis, risk register, probability–impact matrix and baseline.
  4. Execution and closure. The project goes live: the instructor moves it six weeks forward and hands out a progress report with delays and surprises. You update progress with a status date, log issues, compare with the baseline, prepare the report to management and close with the lessons learned.

Why it is practical

About two thirds of the time is practice. Each concept is presented briefly and applied to the scenario right away. When a duration changes, you see on screen how the finish milestone moves. When a supplier gets more expensive, you see the variance from the budget.

The seminar does not follow a single methodology. It uses elements of PMBOK and PRINCE2 where each fits best. It does not lead to a certification exam. A certificate of attendance is awarded at the end.

6 months of PMWaves after the seminar

Every participant keeps 6 months of free access to PMWaves, to apply what they learned to their own projects. The User Guide, in Greek and English, opens from every page of the application.

Who it is for

For people who manage projects, or are about to, and want to learn the job in practice with a modern tool. There are no work or education prerequisites. All you need is a computer with an up-to-date browser.

See the programme, the questions and the next dates on the seminar page.
